Sew a felt pincushion – and a giveaway!

I love hand-sewing with wool felt.

Something about how it doesn’t fray…about how the needle feels when I slide it through the buttery fabric…

…and how easily I can carry the project with me to sew in front of the television or during on a road trip when I’m not driving.

I also love decorative buttons – during the six years I exclusively sewed hair bows, I was always on the hunt for collections of cute buttons to embellish my projects. Collecting whimsical buttons became a bit of an obsession!

So when I had the opportunity to sew a felt pincushion – and embellish it with cute buttons – I knew I had found the perfect craft-sewing project to share with you.

This post on how to sew a felt pincushion is sponsored by Just Another Button Company. But the text, all photos, and any opinions are my own. Please see my disclosure policy at the bottom of my advertising page for more information.

When I traveled to the spring International Quilt Market in Pittsburgh in May (you can read more about it in my post about 7 sewing trends I saw there), my eye caught some of the delightful projects in the booth by Just Another Button Company. Cecile McPeak and Rachel Martin were there (along with Rachel’s cuter-than-cute baby!) to show some of the adorable buttons and pincushion kits offered by their company.

Just Another Button Company manufactures handmade polymer clay buttons and pins, as well as cross-stitch designs, quilt patterns, and pincushion kits and patterns. Cecile is the founder and creative director, and Rachel has followed in her family’s creative footsteps as a designer for JABC and for her own businesses, 2 Martins in a Nest and Rachel Rose Creative Designs.

(you’ll want to follow Rachel of JABC and 2 Martins in a Nest/Rachel Rose Creative Designs on Instagram to see the delightful designs she shares with followers there!)

These two crafty gals collaborated on a book, published in 2013 by Martingale, that shares the cutest felt pincushion designs I’ve seen. “Pincushion Appeal: Patterns for Pincushions to Make You Smile,” features 8 designs sure to keep you stitching…for yourself and for your friends.

As the holiday season sneaks up on us….I have to say….the projects in this book will make great gifts!

I decided to sew up the “Measuring Mushroom.” Cecile and Rachel sent me their book, as well as a kit to make the mushroom so that I wouldn’t have to dig into my own stash of felt to sew this up.

(and because I need to straighten my sewing room after a summer of “sew this up, blog, eat lunch, and take the kids to the pool without cleaning up!”…this was a very good thing!)

The book contains a section for general instructions, as well as detailed project instructions with full-size templates for each design. The steps were well-written and easy to follow, and the combination of illustrated drawings as well as photographs were super helpful.

I was able to easily review the steps and start sewing up my felt pincushion – in this case, that adorable mushroom!
